So
we scurried down to Home Depot with a set of calipers and came back
with this electrical conduit corner piece. The plan is to basically
cut it in half and slide it on over the end of the oil extension tube
that you can see in my other hand.

And
viola! It's done! Now the tube should be long enough and have plenty
of angle on the end.

Perfect!
Now we just need to put the strainer plate back on and we'll be all
set. One note here; Gene Berg (Volkswagen
Guru) says that the intake screen can cause too much restriction
for the oil pump. They recommend a tube shaped cow magnet slipped around
the oil tube. We used three 1/2" magnets stuck on the steel strainer
plate instead.
