That crosspiece is just long enough to travel from the inlet to outlet holes on opposite sides of the pump without continuing on into the matching holes in the engine case.  The bend in the center resulting from the fight with the hammer centers the crosspiece on the eyebolt and makes the whole thing easier.

A socket and extension on the eyebolt nut pops it right out.

After plugging the pump outlet for the full-flow filtration system, the new-new pump is installed and torqued.     It's been all high-pressure peace and love ever since.
